The Benefits of Retractable Leashes for Small Dogs
It’s no secret that smaller size dogs can feel intimidated by bigger ones. We see it in the way they behave around them and how harder small dogs think they should work to show us that they can protect us – louder and more frequent barking being one of the symptoms, along with being possessive and moody when other dogs are around. That being said, as much as we adore them, small dogs are bound to live a life that includes a certain doze of jealousy. And that is not their fault since the reason why small dogs exist at all is our desire to have fluffy best friends that can fit in the pocket, literally.
Given the fact that they are innately going to feel subordinate to larger dogs in many different ways, it is only fair to think about ways in which their smaller size can actually be an advantage (apart from us taking pleasure in it). Well, here’s the part where retractable dog leads can come in quite handy. These dog leads were invented to give dogs more freedom, but every dog owner that has a medium sized or large dog has found them difficult to work with. They might be OK for medium sized dogs that are very well disciplined, but that’s not something we see every day. When it come to large dogs, these leashes are risky since the dog can even be able to pull strongly enough to damage/tear the leash.
Small dogs, on the other hand, don’t have the weight nor strength needed to cause damage. This is precisely why their size can allow them more freedom during walks as you can adjust the retractable dog leads in a way that you dog feels so much freedom of movement, it forgets there’s a leash on it. Smaller dogs are less intimidating to people in general, so you can get away with letting your dog sniff around without it having to be too close to you.
You can also get away with walking less, while exercising your dog more. While it runs around more freely, your dog will get tired more quickly compared to not using a retractable lead which means that walking close to you and stopping now and then is all the exercise it can get, unless you take it to the dog park. However, many of us don’t have the needed time to go to the dog park as often as needed and some people may not be able to endure long walks. So, in the name of saving time without having to compromise your dog’s needs, do not hesitate to invest in retractable dog leads!
