Fishing is one of those sports that so many people love and partake in. That’s because unlike many sports, there are no requirements and no limitations when it comes to your age or fitness level. While it was mostly considered a boys sport, times have changed all that with more and more women partaking as well. This diversity doesn’t stop there, this also includes people from different ethnic backgrounds. Whether you are someone who has learned how to fish by going every weekend with your folks or you have learned how to fish by watching fishing videos online, there is one thing that we all know and that is how many benefits that you can get from fishing.

Before we go into the detail on the benefits of fishing (so you consider taking up fishing), here are some expert tips on how to start. The first thing you should do is invest in a starter kit – you don’t have to spend a fortune if you are just starting out and having expensive equipment doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to catch more fish. Ask some experts for advice when you need it, whether you want to know what season to catch a particular fish. If you don’t know any experts you can easily look up fishing articles or watch fishing videos online to learn something new. Explore the waters around you, there are so many places that you might not even know about. Make the time and go whenever you can and get out there!

Now let’s go over a few of the benefits you can get from fishing (hopefully you might feel inclined to try it out yourself).

The first benefit most people will notice is that fishing can help keep you physically fit. It won’t exactly get your heart rate racing but it does require a bit of paddling or hiking to reach those good fishing spots. You can make each fishing trip as active as you like and while it’s not the most physically draining sport, you still have the benefit of being outside for a while. Just being outdoors is good for your body and your brain but don’t forget to slather on the sunscreen. Another thing you may not know is that fly fishing helps women with breast cancer recover. This type of fishing promotes soft tissue stretching which is great for women in all stages of treatment and recovery.

Some of us do keep what we catch but for those who do not, know that fish are extremely nutritious. They are a great source of omega 3 fatty acids which help decrease blood pressure and lower the risk of stroke. They also reduce irregular heart beats and improve brain function in children and adults alike. As well as being healthy for both the heart and brain, it can also improve your eyesight, decrease the risk of asthma, protect your skin and cut your chances of developing certain types of arthritis. Some researchers even suggest that eating a fish-based diet, can cut your chances of breast cancer.

Fishing is also extremely relaxing and will reduce your stress levels. Being on the waters in the outdoors in enough to help you relieve stress. This is the factor that makes most people actually want to try fishing out. Relieving stress is so important for our mental health, so it’s important we try out different ways to do so. Casting a fishing line every now and again can help you focus on minimizing stress. It can also decrease symptoms of PTSD and boost your mood. Regular fishing can help sufferers improve their feeling of hostility, fear and sadness with lasting effects. If you know someone who is suffering from PTSD why not suggest a fishing trip?
