Bid Farewell to Mess: Benefits of Keeping Your Home Organised
I’ve always marvelled at people who are organised and know how to keep everything neatly ordered, never letting anything make a mess in their life. As much as I tried to comfort myself with the thought that it was scientifically proven messiness equals intelligence, I struggled to convince myself to be a bit more responsible regarding my piles of mess. The usual day went something like this: I’d get ready for work fast, grab a bite, get off to work (possibly running), get a day full of tasks and have something left as homework, get back home, prepare dinner or get a takeaway, and avoid the piles of mess with the excuse I have work waiting to be finished.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks turned into months without me actually doing anything about it. While it didn’t bother me living like that, I didn’t expect I’d have to deal with a sudden move due to job prospects. If I had been the least bit prudent, that wouldn’t have been a problem, but disorganised as I was with all that clutter around, my move was headed for disaster as it seemed, putting my job in question. I may not have known the benefits of organisation, but I was aware of the benefits of hiring a removals company so I did some calculations, looked around for a reliable company and started the long and winding road of cleaning out my mess.
I don’t have to tell you (because it’s that obvious) I ended up wasting so much time and was far from over even when the removalists started their work. Though it was quite embarrassing at the time, it was a lesson I needed to learn; now I can say I know what it feels like hitting rock bottom, so I know how to stay away from it and I’m no longer marvelling at people with organisational skills, but can proudly say I’m one of them. Having the help of professionals concerning packing materials also turned to be crucial, time-saving and cost-effective.
You can’t handle mess just by stacking it up in all sorts of boxes as it would only exacerbate the problem. Instead, boxes and wrapping materials should help you separate things. It’s this part of the process that made me realise it never hurts acquiring the mindset of a minimalist since most things I possessed were either messing up with my emotions or weren’t of any use to me. That’s why now that I am in my new home, having thrown, sold and donated most of those troubling messy piles, I gathered up the essential packing materials to be used when the time comes, meanwhile using them for storing most of my items. In other words, they help me a great deal with keeping things in perfect order.
Though I wasn’t aware at the time, my clutter had affected my mood and brought a lot of stress in my life. Now that all of it is a thing of the past, there’s no room for crankiness, sulking, and nights of bad sleep. Much to my surprise, once I’d changed the scenery and gotten rid of all the clutter holding me back, I became more focused, starting to think clearly and getting much better ideas, resulting in overflowing creativity and productivity. Feel free to share your own experience and lesson learned of the kind (if you’ve had it).
