How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Shoes: Walk Down the Aisle in Style

Throughout history, weddings have always been a joyous occasion to celebrate the union of two kindred spirits. The festivities are a genuine reflection of the couple’s personalities and their love for one another. Each wedding is unique in its own way and every bride wants no more than to look her absolute best on her big day.

When it comes to putting together a stunning bridal appearance with jewellery, hair, makeup and of course – the dress, one aspect that is often overlooked is the pair of shoes that will be peeking out from beneath the gown. Sure, they’re mostly covered, but that doesn’t mean they don’t deserve some attention.

How Do You Choose the Right Wedding Shoes?

When it comes to deciding on which pair of shoes to wear on your big day, the options are quite literally endless. If you want to narrow down your choices, you’ll have to stick to a select few criteria.

Think About the Colour

Whenever weddings are brought up, the most common colour that is associated with them is white. It comes as no surprise then that a lot of brides’ default is a pair of white shoes on their big day. There’s obviously nothing wrong with that, but if you want to add a pop of colour, or personality to your outfit, don’t be afraid to branch out.

Sure, white represents purity and innocence, but that doesn’t mean you have to shy away from other shades. If you have your heart set on a pair of sleek black bridal shoes then you should absolutely go for it. Despite being a somewhat more unconventional choice, it can look incredibly chic and elegant.

The contrast of black against a white dress can also be quite striking. Not only does it look fierce and modern, but it will also help you stand out from all of the other white-clad brides out there. Why should you blend in when you can stand out?

Plus, black bridal shoes can be worn again and again, long after the wedding day is over. This particular colour goes with just about anything and is fitting for a myriad of occasions. When you’re able to wear your shoes time and time again, it makes the decision of choosing a pair that much easier.

And if your black wedding shoes happen to get a bit dirty on the big day, no problem. A quick wipe with a damp cloth will do the trick and they’ll look as good as new. White, on the other hand, is a lot more difficult to clean and keep looking pristine.

Consider the Heel Height

Since you’ll be on your feet for most of the day, you should always prioritise comfort over style when it comes to your shoes. Sure, those sky-high stilettos may look amazing, but if you can’t walk or stand in them for more than a few minutes, they’re not worth it.

Not only will they end up giving you blisters, but you’ll also be in a massive amount of pain by the end of the night. When your feet are throbbing and you can’t wait to get those shoes off, it’ll definitely put a damper on your big day.

A lot of brides make the mistake of thinking that they have to suffer for fashion, but that’s not the case at all. You can have your cake and eat it too – or in this instance, you can have your fashionable shoes and be comfortable as well.

The key is to find a balance between the two. A good rule of thumb is to look for something with a medium heel height. And if you want to go completely flat, that’s fine too. There are plenty of chic and stylish flats on the market that will look great with your wedding dress.

Be Mindful of Decorations

The details and decorations on your shoes can also play a role in how comfortable they are. If you have numerous chunky straps or buckles, they may end up digging into your skin and causing blisters. The last thing you want is to be wincing in pain every time you take a step.

Any other chunky embellishments on the sides of your shoes can easily get caught in the fabric of your dress, which can cause it to rip. And if you’re constantly having to adjust your shoes or tug at your dress, you’ll end up focusing more on that than enjoying your celebration.

With that in mind, less is definitely more when it comes to decorations. A simple pair of satin flats or strappy stilettos will always strike the right chord in terms of both comfort and style.

Do a Twirl Test

This simple yet effective test will help you determine whether or not your shoes are too uncomfortable. To do it, start by putting on your shoes of choice and standing up. Once you’re up, do a few practice twirls around the room.

If you can twirl without losing your balance or feeling pain, then they’re most likely a good option. But if you find yourself wobbling or holding on to furniture for support, it’s a sign that you should keep looking.

Wear Them Before the Big Day

Even if you think you’ve found the perfect pair of shoes, it’s always a good idea to break them in before the wedding. Whether you’re wearing flats or heels, your feet need time to get used to them.

Put them on for a few hours each day in the weeks leading up to your wedding. This will help prevent any uncomfortable surprises and ensure that your feet are in tip-top shape for the main event.
