Guide to Streetwear Fashion

Streetwear isn’t just baggy pants and loose shirts. It incorporates so much more. This trend is so versatile that it doesn’t just go away with the changing seasons. It adapts and offers clothing that everyone can enjoy no matter the time of the year or current fashion.

Streetwear is casual yet fashionable and even though it’s defined as something worn by the youth, it definitely isn’t restricted to something that only young people would wear. It emerged globally in the ‘90s with influences from hip-hop clothing style, surf-skate culture, sportswear and Japanese street fashion.

It’s difficult to say what is considered to be streetwear because there are constantly new influences and social media is a big part of it. It’s the consumers that decide what’s trendy and what’s not with their activity on social media. Since many celebrities and influencers know what good streetwear means, they have a great impact on the consumers’ mindset when it comes to popular clothing items.

Even though at the beginning, streetwear was something associated with men’s wear only, nowadays women’s streetwear fashion is as equally popular as men’s.

MLB apparel

What Are the Staple Items of Streetwear Fashion Nowadays?

Classic Sportswear Brands like MLB Apparel

MLB stands for Major League Baseball which is the American professional baseball organisation. Over time, fans were inspired to start dressing like their favourite players, and today the sale of this baseball clothing generates large income for MLB. In the beginning, only jersey replicas were being made, but now there’s a great variety of high-quality MLB apparel to choose from. The MLB team logos are printed on shirts and all kinds of clothing, caps, and sneakers.

Baseball Caps

Baseball or MLB caps are the ultimate sportswear piece. The model that we associate with baseball caps today has been around since the 1940s. It’s a part of the official uniform that baseball players wear, with the sports team’s logo in the front and the function to protect the players from the sun. There are several types of MLB hats:

  • Fitted Cap – These hats don’t allow to be adjusted to your head because they haven’t got a closure in the back. So you’ll need to get the measurements right because oversized caps aren’t in style (and probably won’t be, ever!);
  • Adjustable Cap – This cap has some kind of closure in the back like velcro, metal buckle, or snapback closure. If you’re someone who wants to pull their ponytail through the cap, this is your to-go option.
The top of the baseball caps is usually flat or slightly curved and they have a fabric-covered button on the crown of the cap. They are so versatile that can be combined and fitted into every style.

Jerseys and Shirts

Since authentic jerseys are rare and expensive, of course, replicas are the most affordable and widely-spread option. The authentic ones are of the highest quality materials and the logos and numbers on them are stitched rather than printed. The replicas’ logos can be ironed-on or printed onto the material that is usually of lower quality.

If jerseys aren’t your thing but you still like the logos, there are all kinds of shirts, t-shirts, and muscle tees that have the logos and numbers on them. They’re simple enough to be worn with everything. Jerseys can be easily styled as well with jeans, shorts, and sweatpants. Under it, you can wear a shirt, tee, or hoodie, and when buttoned up it gives you that preppy look.

Baseball jackets

Jackets

Baseball jackets or coach jackets are another piece of MLB apparel that is rising in popularity. They can come in neutral colours but bright-coloured jackets are definitely what most people prefer. Besides being a symbol of fashion, they’re worn for their practicality as well. They’re lightweight and waterproof which makes them suitable for many different occasions. They have embroidery or print of logos and numbers on one or both sides and buttons in the front.

Comfy Shoes and Sneaker Culture

Since streetwear is all about comfort while looking fashionable, comfy shoes are something that you would want to have for sure. Everything that you feel comfortable in can be styled for streetwear. And what agrees more with our feet than sneakers?

Sneakers were designed for sports in the first place but nowadays they’re part of almost every casual look. There are so many different designs that you just can’t but not love them. Celebrities sign contracts with big companies for promotion and this has made sneakers representation of the good style. There’s always a big fuss over limited-edition sneakers. We all want what our favourite artist wears, right?

Whether you’re more into luxury brands like Balenciaga or Gucci, or classic streetwear like Nike, Vans, or Converse, sneakers can be adapted to every piece of clothing. Maybe a few years ago it was unimaginable to wear sneakers with skirts and dresses, but today we can’t imagine not wearing them together.

A Modern Twist to Classic Blazers

Blazers are similar to suits but a little more casual. They are tailored, made of heavier materials, and somewhere in the middle between formal suits and casual sports jackets. They can be divided into structured blazers that nicely fit the body shape, and soft or unstructured that are more informal and don’t follow the line of the body.

More frequently, blazers are styled with hoodies, sneakers, sweatpants, and jeans. It might sound weird at first but if you haven’t seen a blazer worn in this way until now, visit the Instagram of a few celebrities and they’ll most certainly have a street, chill look with a blazer to show off.

Hoodies

Hoodies as the Most Versatile Piece

We all own and love a good-quality hoodie. Even if it isn’t our first choice for going out, it’s definitely first for relaxing at home or exercising. It’s the most comfortable piece and the preferred one during cold winter days.

If you never thought that you could wear a hoodie with something else than sweatpants or jeans, think twice. Plain hoodies in simple or bold colours or graphic ones with sports logos, designers’, band, and TV shows’ logos, the choice is yours.

For a fun look combine it with interesting shorts, boyfriend jeans, and skirts, or wear a dress under it. You could always put on the classic leather or denim jacket. For a more avant-garde vibe, throw a blazer or checked coat over or get your leather pants out. Try your knee boots with a long hoodie or combine it with pants, a belt, and strappy heels.
