How to Choose Wall Art That Will Benefit the Look of Your Space

Wall art is a common interior decorating tool. It can involve everything from canvases to framed wall prints, paintings and other creative artistic embellishments, that hang on a wall.  Based on your style and preference, you can choose from a variety of themes and colour schemes that suit your living space or office. Carefully chosen wall art can have a number of benefits for your space.

For one, it can be a great way to spark some dialogue among the people in the space which can further make them more comfortable to share their impressions, thoughts, feelings and ideas. Plus, observing colourful art can give people a break from their busy lifestyles. If the space lacks character, some carefully chosen wall art will instantly lighten it up. Not to mention, it’s the best way to give boring, white walls a makeover.

Whether your space is traditional, modern or minimalistic, here are the main things to consider in order to find the right wall art for your decorating goals.

Consider Your Available Options

As mentioned, wall decor is available in many forms. If you’re looking for an affordable way to bring some personality to space, you can adorn your walls with the help of wall prints. They are a lot cheaper than original paintings for instance, but if you’re not an art-nerd, they can be enough to add some colour and creativity. Wall prints are usually made of canvas. On the market, you can find framed prints and frameless prints. Framed prints are perfect for tying the art with the decor together by connecting the frame with the colour scheme of the decor. On the other hand, frameless prints can easily adapt to any style.

Canvas is a sturdy material that has been treated to handle high quality pigmented inks. It’s acid-free and keeps the vibrance of the printed image for a very long time. The image has been printed on the canvas and then sprayed with protective varnish in a matte or glossy finish. The matte finish gives softness to the image, while the glossy finish has a slightly warm tone and reflects light better. As a result, canvas wall prints resemble an original painting very well because of the natural canvas texture that adds colour depth.

Whether you’ve opted for an original painting or chose a frameless print that you want to have framed, it’s important to create a cohesion between the furniture and room décor. A simple black border frame keeps the focus on the artwork. If wood dominates the space, a wooden frame will blend in perfectly. On the other hand, if you have metal accents around, a metal frame can also work. Some larger frames may be heavy and difficult to transport and depending on the image size, the frame may cost more.

If you want to go for something large and bold, wallpaper is your friend. You can use it to create a feature wall that will stand out and make a unique statement. Wallpapers in neutral hues are perfect for disrupting the pattern of white walls in a tasteful way without disturbing the colour scheme around it. However, with all the colours and patterns available, you can feel free to experiment with the look of any room. For instance, if you prefer abstract wall décor, then you can play with shapes, colours and materials and explore some inspiring ideas, like for instance retro wallpaper.

Pick the Right Colour

Consider the dominant colour and a few additional shades to arrow down your search of wall art. If you want to change the rest of the room’s decor, you can also look for a piece of wall art that you like and use it as an inspiration for the space’s new colour palette. You can also try contrasting colours and hues for a mismatched approach.

However, be careful not to overdo it and overwhelm the space. It’s okay to add wall art in a different colour than the rest of the space as long as it has some other matching feature, like for instance a theme that matches the style (nature, vintage, retro) or a frame made of the material dominating the space.

Mind the Purpose of the Room

Usually, living rooms have the largest available space and many possibilities to add art and decoration. To personalise your living room and match your taste and style, you can opt for a big wall print as a statement piece and a few smaller prints with the same theme. Another option is to create a dynamic gallery using smaller art wall prints, paintings or pictures grouped together.

The kitchen is the heart of every home, so it’s always a good idea to choose bright and light colours that give a feeling of an easy, not overwhelming environment. The dining room is the gathering point of family and food, so make sure to pick something that evokes warm feelings and doesn’t distract. Medium-sized wall art is the best choice in this case.

When it comes to your bedroom, choose an artwork that is relaxing and refreshing and gives off good vibes. Wall art with soothing colours or depicting a gentle landscape and other themes from nature can be a great match for this area of your home. Make sure that whatever you choose is simple and calm.

Similar to the bedroom, your bathroom is also an area where you can calm and de-stress from all your daily activities. Very often the bathroom gets overlooked when it comes to wall décor, but including some unexpected wall art is a great way to give this area a more sophisticated feel. Plus, art prints or paintings in the bathroom will give you something wonderful to look at while you’re having a relaxing soak in the tub.

When it comes to the office, whether is your home office or a corporate one, always choose art pieces that interest, motivate and inspire. Keep in mind that decorating entrances and waiting areas with welcoming wall art can provide a great first impression and set the tone of your business, promoting positivity.
