How to Choose Apres Ski Boots That Will Benefit You the Most

When packing for a skiing adventure, most of us focus on what we’re going to wear as we hit the slopes. However, what we wear when we’re off the slopes is equally important, especially the boots. A pair of good snow boots will keep you warm, dry and comfortable in the wet and muddy conditions as you’re making your way towards the slopes. Oh, and stylish as you explore the town and hit the local restaurants and bars.

apres ski footwear

Considering how apres ski footwear is important for a fun and enjoyable skiing trip, you need to choose the right pair. However, not just any winter boots can do. Apres ski footwear is specifically designed to provide better overall protection and comfort in the extreme conditions up in the mountains. With that being said, here are some tips that can help you pick the right pair.

Waterproofing & Breathability

A good pair of apres ski boots should be waterproof and breathable. Some boots advertised as fully waterproof are made of rubber and as such offer no breathability. This means that they can cause your feet to sweat profusely, which isn’t comfortable no safe in cold conditions. With that being said, it’s important to make a good compromise between breathability and waterproofing. In general, it’s recommended to get boots made of 100% waterproof material such as rubber. The stitching of the boots should also be waterproof. When it comes to breathability, natural materials are better than synthetic ones. Leather uppers offer a good dose of breathability, and are still protective enough to prevent your feet from getting wet as you move through the snow.

Insulation

If you’re skiing in Australian conditions, your apres ski boots do not necessarily need to have exceptional insulation. However, if you’re preparing to hit colder slopes, you’ll need boots with a higher degree of insulation. Snow boots with Thinsulate or Thermolite insulation are lightweight layers and very effective in keeping your feet warm.

Fit

Your apres ski boots should fit comfortably and mould around your foot. They shouldn’t be too big and cause your feet to move around when you walk. They shouldn’t be too tight either, so make sure to choose boots with adjustable straps or shoelaces if you have wider feet. It’s recommended that the boots are higher than the hem of your pants, ideally above your ankle. This way, you can wear your pants inside them to prevent snow from getting in.
