3 Benefits of Thermal Clothing for Snowboarders
Well, it’s no surprise that cold weather calls for layers of warm clothes. But if you’re going snowboarding, the typical winter attire is simply not enough to protect you from the freezing temperatures and wet snow up there in the mountains. And even if you put on multiple layers, it can cause you to sweat profusely and even hinder your movement which will reflect badly on your performance. With that being said, it’s important to dress in thermal clothes specially designed for snowboarding and other winter sports. In doing so, you can expect the following benefits.
Stay Warm
When snowboarding, your number one priority will be to stay warm. And the best way to stay warm is to wear clothes that prevent the heat from escaping your body. Thermal clothes are made from fabrics that can trap air and thus form a protective layer of insulation. However, unless they don’t wrap tightly around your body, thermal clothes won’t have the desired effect. For that reason, make sure to choose clothes that are an ideal fit and won’t leave any part of your body exposed. Luckily, quality thermal clothes are easy to find in all kinds of sizes ranging from plus size snowboard pants to children’s one piece suits.
Stay Dry
Besides extremely cold temperatures, getting wet also increases your chances of hypothermia. And when you’re snowboarding you’re likely to experience falls and get into contact with the cold, wet snow. For that reason, it’s important to wear waterproof thermal clothes that will prevent the moisture from reaching your body. So, while wool is a great fabric when it comes to thermal insulation, it also tends to absorb moisture which makes it unsuitable for winter sports.
With that being said, it’s best to look for synthetic materials such as polyester which come with a 100% waterproof rating. Again, it’s important to choose clothes that fit you perfectly so that no snow will accidentally come into contact with your body. With that being said, it’s better to choose plus size snowboard pants that you can simply stuff into your boots than pants that are too short and leave your ankles exposed.
Keep the Sweat of Your Body
Any sports activity will have you sweating, and snowboarding is no different. However, the problem with sweating in cold weather is that the sweat will additionally cool your body, sometimes even to a dangerous degree. For that reason, it’s important that your lowermost layers are able to quickly wick the moisture of your skin. So, besides thermal clothing, make sure to also look for thermal underwear that will absorb the sweat and pass it through the fabric so that it can evaporate quickly. Polyester and other synthetic fabrics have great moisture-wicking abilities. But if you prefer natural fabrics, silk is also a good option.
